Urban and peri-urban Agriculture in Geneva
Geneva is a major international player for the trade of agricultural goods, harvest insurances, food safety services and many other activities. Yet, Geneva is also situated in a fertile valley with a favorable climate for agriculture and demanding customers. This field trip will start right next to the conference venue vising urban farming initiatives and in-urbe trails and demonstration plots of HEPIA, the University School for Agronomy and Architecture in Geneva. After lunch, the visit will take the public transport to visit the vegetable production area of Perly. From there, it is only a stone’s throw to the trials of conservation agriculture, run by AGRIGENEVE, the regional farmers extension and support agency. The present field trip will point out the challenges but also the market opportunities of a production close or even within a vibrant city. Exchanges with professionals, agronomists, extension officers and scientists will give an insight into inventive solutions for production while respecting environmental standards in a continuous exchange between landsmen and townsfolk.
